Oujda Matic 6 track EP

April 18, 2008

Most of my physical music collection is in storage so music uploads here will be few, but I’ve been wanting to put this up somewhere for a while now with at least something of a description (though that’s stretching it a bit). I can’t say for sure where the music originates though I think it’s Algerian from the “Oujda Matic” appearing on the cover. The CD was picked up while visiting a town in southern Spain in 2007. Wish I could offer some information about the musicians and so on, but the music is excellent. 6 versions of the same relentless rhythm always undoing itself, there’s definitely a funk to it - with vocals from the pair who appear on the cover.

3 tonnes of Mackeral pull trawler under…

April 17, 2008

In early March a news story appeared on Spanish TV, reporting a fishing trawler had sunk off the coast of the Mediterranean. The event warranted a national broadcast because of way in which the vessel was ‘hundido’ - the nets were so full the boat was dragged under. There have been few media reports of the sinking, this image was taken of divers later salvaging the empty nets of El RuiseƱor.

This post isn’t intended to single out or comment on any one particular group of fishermen working for a living.
